What mini splits cost in Massachusetts & Rhode Island in 2026
A ductless mini split is priced by the job, not the box: the number of indoor units (zones), the capacity of the outdoor condenser, how far the refrigerant lines run, and the electrical work your panel needs. Across Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, most single-zone installations land between $4,000 and $7,000 installed, and whole-home multi-zone systems typically run $15,000 to $28,000 before rebates.
Rebates change the math substantially. In 2026, a qualifying whole-home installation earns $2,650 per ton from Mass Save, up to $8,500 — which can cover a quarter or more of a typical project. Six things that move the price
Each indoor head adds equipment and labor, and more zones need a larger outdoor condenser. Installing several zones in one visit costs less per zone than adding them one at a time.
Premium cold-climate lines (Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Daikin) heat reliably below 0°F and typically run 15–25% more than standard lines like Goodman or Cooper & Hunter.
Long refrigerant runs, second-floor heads, or interior rooms far from the condenser mean more copper, more labor, and sometimes wall chases or line-hide.
Every system needs a dedicated circuit ($250–$500). Older homes with full panels may need a panel upgrade, which can add $500–$2,000.
Plaster walls, brick, tight mechanical spaces, and historic-district rules (common on the Cape and in Newport County) add installation time.
Rebates require listed equipment, correct sizing, and a participating installer. Filed wrong, a project can miss thousands — filed right, it's the biggest single discount on the job.
2026 rebates: what changed, what you can get
The federal 25C heat pump tax credit expired December 31, 2025 — there is no federal credit for 2026 installations. State programs are now where the savings live, and both states tightened equipment rules this year: systems must use newer A2L refrigerants (R-32 / R-454B); R-410A models no longer qualify.
Massachusetts — Mass Save®

Rhode Island — RI Energy & Clean Heat RI
- Whole-home ductless displacement: up to $1,250 per ton, capped at $10,000
- Replacing electric baseboard: enhanced tier up to $1,500 per ton
- Supplemental systems: up to $625 per ton
- Clean Heat RI (income-eligible): 60% of project cost up to $11,500 — funds run through Dec 31, 2026
