Our Furnace Replacement Process

Replacing a furnace is a big project – but with Armus Mechanical, it’s straightforward and hassle-free. We take care of every step, from the initial assessment to the final testing. Below, we outline each stage of our furnace replacement process, complete with real project photos showing how we upgrade an old, inefficient system to a new one.

1. Old System Inspection and Assessment

Old Furnace Inspection

An outdated furnace unit before replacement, showing wear on components and old duct connections.

Every successful installation begins with a thorough inspection of your current furnace and HVAC system Our technician examines the old furnace (and AC unit, if you have central air) to assess its condition, size, and any installation challenges. We check the ductwork, flue/chimney connections, gas lines, and electrical supply to ensure the new furnace will be compatible and up to code. This step allows us to determine the right replacement furnace capacity and identify any issues (like ventilation or airflow problems) that need addressing. By planning ahead, we ensure a smooth replacement with no surprises. (For example, in the photo above our team inspects an older furnace prior to removal.)

2. Safe Removal of the Old Furnace and AC

Old AC Unit

The old Trane XE1000 outdoor AC unit before removal – this outdated condenser and its indoor furnace were slated for replacement.

Once we have a plan, our crew will carefully remove your old furnace and any related components. We shut off power and gas, then disassemble and uninstall the old unit, including disconnecting it from ducts, vents, and wiring. If you have a matching central air conditioner, we’ll recover the refrigerant and remove the old condenser unit as well. We take care to protect your home during this process – flooring is covered and debris is managed safely. All old equipment is hauled away for proper disposal or recycling. (In the image above, you can see the outdoor AC unit before we took it out – a system like this will be replaced with a modern, efficient model.)

3. Preparation for the New Installation

New Equipment StagingNew OxBox furnace and AC unit (center/left) prepared for installation, shown beside the old furnace, coil, and Trane AC components (right) after removal.

With the old equipment out of the way, we prepare the area for your new furnace installation. This preparation stage can include cleaning the furnace alcove or closet, updating the floor pad or plenum, and making any needed modifications to venting or ductwork so that the new unit will fit perfectly. We’ll unpack and stage your new furnace and condenser (AC unit), as shown in the photo where the brand-new OxBox (a Trane brand) furnace and AC are ready to go. Before installation, we double-check measurements and connections (electrical, gas, refrigerant lines for the AC, etc.). Proper preparation ensures the installation goes smoothly and your new system operates safely and efficiently from the start.

4. Installing the New Furnace

New Furnace Installation

A new OxBox high-efficiency furnace installed in place, with reconnected ductwork and drain piping (electrical connections being finalized).

Next, we perform the new furnace installation. Our technicians position the new furnace and connect it to your home’s ductwork , ensuring a secure, sealed fit for optimal airflow. We reconnect the flue or intake/ exhaust piping for high-efficiency models, as well as the drain line for condensation if it’s a condensing furnace. All electrical hookups, thermostat wires, and gas lines are carefully connected and checked for safety. We also install the evaporator coil (if you have central AC) on the furnace and connect refrigerant lines at this stage. The new furnace is anchored in place, and any new sheet metal work (transitions to ductwork) is crafted for a neat, professional fit. Our expert replacement of outdated furnaces means even if your old system was 20+ years old, we have the knowledge to upgrade it to today’s standards.

5. Installing the New AC Condenser

New AC Condenser

The new OxBox (a Trane brand) high-efficiency air conditioning condenser, freshly installed on a level pad outside.

If your heating system replacement includes a new air conditioner or heat pump, we’ll install that unit as well (often done alongside the furnace replacement). In this example, we replaced the old Trane AC with a new OxBox condenser. We set the new unit on a sturdy, level pad and reconnect high- and low-pressure refrigerant lines, vacuum-seal and charge the system with refrigerant, and hook up the electrical disconnect. All connections are insulated and secured for weather-tight performance. The new outdoor unit, shown above, is not only more efficient but also much quieter and reliable. By replacing both furnace and AC together, you ensure all components are perfectly matched for performance and warranty – however, we perform standalone furnace replacements too. Either way, you’ll have an upgraded HVAC system ready to keep your home comfortable year-round.

6. System Testing and Final Checks

With the new furnace (and AC) in place, our team performs thorough testing and quality checks. We power up the system and monitor it through a full heating cycle to ensure the furnace ignites properly, the blower motor runs smoothly, and warm air is flowing correctly to all your vents. For gas furnaces, we test for gas leaks and verify that the flue is exhausting safely. If a new AC was installed, we also test the cooling function and measure refrigerant pressures. Our technicians will calibrate the thermostat and verify that all controls and safety features are functioning. We’ll explain the new system’s operation to you and answer any questions. Final step: we only finish the job when we’re confident that your new furnace is heating your home comfortably and efficiently. You can expect a tidy workspace – we clean up any debris and make sure your utility area is as clean (or cleaner) than we found it. Now you can enjoy peace of mind with a reliable new heating system.

What’s the cost of a new gas furnace?
The cost of a new gas furnace can vary widely depending on the furnace’s efficiency rating, capacity (size), brand, and the complexity of the installation. On average, homeowners can expect to invest anywhere from about \$3,000 to \$7,000 for a typical gas furnace replacement, including installation. High-efficiency or 6 larger furnaces can cost more (sometimes \$8,000 or above), while basic replacement models might be on the lower end of the range.
